Henry Meadows, an 11-year-old from Bury St Edmunds Golf Club, won the 2017 East Anglian Under 12 Junior Golf Championship which was held at Stonham Barns on Sunday 25th June. His score of 62 (+4 over par) was good enough for a 3 shot win over last year’s champion Charlie Goodridge. The pair played together and reversed the positions from the 2016 Championship. This was Henry’s second win in the last two years and he is still eligible to make it three next year.
The Under 10 Age Category was won by Ryan Daley, a 9-year-old from Stonham Barns and the Under 8 Age Category was won by 7-Year-Old Isaac Vesey. It was great to have five players in the Under 8 category.
Well done to all the players, some of which had not played any competitive golf before and it was great to see them complete 18 holes of golf.
This this event was held using the Big HOLE Golf concept where the holes are 8" instead of the regular holes of 4.25". Stonham Barns was the first course in the UK to convert to this new size of hole. This idea of Big HOLE Golf is to Make Golf More Fun - Have Fewer Putts - Make Golf Quicker and the juniors really enjoyed the larger holes. There were some chip ins and some great long putts holed. For more info visit the website www.bigholegolf.com
The East Anglian Under 12 Junior Golf Championship was established by Tony Dobson, the PGA Professional at Stonham Barns and has been played every year since 2001. The event, which was featured on a Channel 4 documentary in 2008, has produced some great champions and given many others the chance to enjoy playing some competitive golf at a young age in a relaxed, friendly environment.

Alexandra Rock, a 12 year old from Prague, holed a 15 foot putt on the final green to win the 2016 Stonham Junior Players Championship with a great score of 32 (3 over par). Alex who lives in Prague, is a member of Podebrady Golf Club and amazingly now has a current handicap of nine, had to hole her par putt on the last green to achieve the outright win. In second place was 11 year old Sawyer Osbourn from Lakenheath Golf Club who scored a 33 (4 over par)

This event started at Stonham Barns in 2001 and has been played every year since. A number of previous winners have gone on to become county players and even England internationals. In addition to rewarding the winners one of the main aims of these events is to encourage players of all standards to come along and enjoy playing some golf and it was really great to see some of the players who did not have their best game still smiling and enjoying their golf.

On a fantastically sunny November day there were players ranging from 6 years old (Michael Kirk) to 14 years old (Matthew Albon). There were four age categories. The winner of the Under 8 was Sebastian Kubitzek who scored a 38. The Under 10’s was won by last year’s champion, Charlie Goodridge, which score a 40. The Under 12’s was won by Sawyer Osbourn with a 33 and the Under 15’s was won by the overall winner Alexandra Rock.

This event was played using larger 8’ golf holes and Stonham Barns Golf is actively promoting Big HOLE Golf which was developed by Murray Blair in Australia. The concept is now becoming popular all over the world as a way of getting increased participation into golf – QUICKER ROUNDS – MAKES GOLF FUN – HAVE LESS PUTTS. Well Done Justin Rose on 2016 Olympic Golf Gold Medal

19/8/2016

Olympic Champion Justin Rose has been praised for his gold medal performance in Rio by the Golf Foundation, the charity that helps young people to enjoy the benefits of golf and encourages them to ‘Start, Learn and Stay’ in the sport. It is hoped that Rose’s “inspirational” win will attract new golfers from the watching audience for the Olympics.

The Golf Foundation reaches 500,000 young people each year through its HSBC Golf Roots programme in schools, golf clubs and the community. Children from all backgrounds and abilities are introduced to golf as the Foundation supports the national golf development bodies of England, Scotland and Wales. By 2018 the charity is seeking to encourage 50,000 youngsters into a golf club every year, with 15,000 going on to be regular players.

A young Hampshire boy called Justin Rose, aged 11, came fifth in the final of the Golf Foundation Under 13’s Age Group Championship in 1991, and two years later won the Under 14’s Championship outright, at Patshull Park in Shropshire.

The Golf Foundation funded club coaching which included Justin, and his reward for winning the Under 14’s in 1993 was to be invited to a coaching week at Wentworth in the Spring of 1994, led by then Ryder Cup European Team Captain Bernard Gallacher.

In 1996 Justin earned the Golf Foundation’s ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’ for a period when he was winning many of amateur golf’s prestigious titles against elite adult players.

Rose has since repaid this early encouragement by supporting the Golf Foundation in return, speaking positively about the charity’s work and appearing as a guest during Foundation activity at major golf events, including taking on the kids by playing the easy-to-learn golf format, Tri-Golf, which is thriving in primary schools up and down the country.

Justin Rose is an ambassador for England Golf and its ‘Get into golf’ campaign Get Into Golf which is supported by Sky Sports – offers new and returning players an ideal way into the game with great value coaching from PGA professionals and an introduction to a sport which offers a good social life and many health benefits.

The Golf Foundation presented its ‘Spirit of Golf’ Award to Justin last year in recognition of the inspirational way in which he plays the game, an accolade previously given to among others, Tom Watson, Gary Player and Tony Jacklin.

It is hoped that golf in the Olympics will have a positive affect on the sport as a whole. Junior golf enjoyed a boost through the legacy of the 2012 Olympics in London, through the School Games programme in schools, reaching over 5000 junior golfers in the UK.

Everyone at the Stonham Barns Golf is delighted for Justin Rose. The sport of golf couldn’t have had a better ambassador than Justin. He is a fine player, a major champion, and great sportsman who will no doubt inspire many new young people to try golf through his performance and positive attitude in winning gold for Team GB in Rio.

Charlie Goodridge from Bury St Edmunds Golf Club has won the 16th East Anglian U12 Junior Golf Championship at Stonham Barns by one shot from Alexandra Rock and Henry Meadows. In a close fought event 9 year old Charlie scored 64 (6 over par) over 18 holes around the Stonham Barns course.

In 2nd place were 12 year old Alexandra Rock from Prague and 10 year old Henry Meadows from Fynn Valley Golf Club, who both score a 65 (7 over par). Alexandra from Podebrady Golf Club in Prague was leading after 9 holes and just missed out with a bogey, bogey finish to her round. Henry was the 2015 champion and made an excellent effort in his bid to retain the title.

In the age categories the Under 12’s was won by Alexandra Rock, the Under 10’s was won by the champion, Charlie Goodridge and the Under 8’s was won 7 year old, Finlay Brock with the help of an excellent birdie 2 on his 17th hole.

There was one Under 6 player, Michael Kirk and well done to him on completing the 18 holes. A special mention to 6 year old, Imogen Potter, who scored her first ever birdie on the par three 16th hole.

This was the first year this event was held using the Big HOLE Golf concept where the holes are 8" instead of the regular holes of 4.25". Stonham Barns was the first course in the UK to convert to this new size of hole. This idea of Big HOLE Golf is to Make Golf More Fun - Have Fewer Putts - Make Golf Quicker and the juniors really enjoyed the larger holes. There were at least four chip ins and some great long putts holed. For more info visit the website www.bigholegolf.com

The Stonham Junior Flag Golf Tournament, now in its 15th year proved a great success. This year the event was played using the Big HOLE Golf concept where the hole is 8” in size, almost twice the size of a regular hole. The aim is to make golf fun, speed up play and make putting easier. The juniors loved it and we had plenty of chip ins and hole outs.

In total 18 juniors played from all over the Suffolk and they were blessed with a lovely sunny morning. The Flag Tournament is played over 9 holes and each player has 36 shots to get as far round the course as they can. After playing their 36th shot they put a flag in the ground.

This year 9 year old Charlie Goodridge amazed us all by reaching the 12th fairway having played his first nine holes in level par 29. He was a clear winner in the U10 age category. The Under 8’s was won by Ryan Daley, a 7 year old from Stonham Barns who reached the 8th green. The U12’s was won by Sawyer Osbourn, an 11 year old from Lakenheath reaching the 9th green and the U15’s was won by 13 year old Soloman Westmancott from Stonham Barns who also reached the 9th green.

Stonham Barns Golf is actively promoting Big HOLE Golf which was developed by Murray Blair in Australia. The concept is now becoming popular all over the world as a way of getting increased participation into golf – QUICKER ROUNDS – MAKES GOLF FUN – HAVE LESS PUTTS. For more information on Big HOLE Golf kits contact Stonham Barns Golf on 01449 711545 or visit their website page www.stonhambarnsgolf.co.uk/big-hole-golf.

24/4/2016

Well done to 9 year old Henry Meadows from Fynn Valley Golf Club on winning the Stonham Barns April Junior Tournament with an excellent score of 32 (3 over par). This was the best score of the day and Henry was the winner of the Under 10 Age Category. Henry had a close game with his playing partner, 9 year old Charlie Goodridge, who was only one behind with 3 holes to play but a blistering finish of 2,3,3 (1 under par) by Henry gave him a 4 shot winning margin.

The Under 12 Age Category was won by Sawyer Osborne, an 11 year old from Lakenheath Golf Club, with the second best score of the day, 32 (4 over par). The Under 8 Age Category was won by Ryan Daley, a 7 yr old player from Stonham Barns, with a score of 52.

It was great to see four of the Stonham Barns Junior Academy players have a go for the first time and well done to Rupert Newman, Joshua Newman, Ethan Lewin and Kyran Lewin.

Stonham Barns organises eight tournaments each year for ages 4-15. The aim is to give juniors the opportunity to play some competitive golf from a young age in a relaxed friendly environment. More details of all their junior events for 2016 can be found on their website www.stonhambarnsgolf.co.uk.
