Robin Barton captured the 2019 Suffolk Open Footgolf Trophy with a marvellous score of 49 (9 under par). This was the same winning score as last year and was good enough to win by one from Dan Ferretti and Roman Barton who both scored 50 (8 under par). In 4th place was last year winner Darren Wheat who put up a good defence of his title.
Robin is a regular player on the ECFGT Tour and is from Cambridge FootGolf Club. He attends all the events with his two sons, Roman and Milo. Roman, who is 13, won the Suffolk Open Junior Trophy and finished 2nd in the overall event. This is the 4th year that Stonham Barns Footgolf have hosted the Suffolk Open and with a turn out of just under 60 players the event was well supported. The Eastern Counties Footgolf Tour (ECFGT) is a not for profit organisation that organises footgolf events for all skill levels to promote the game of footgolf in the Eastern Region. Footgolfer Owen Peck, who last year became UK FootGolf National Junior Tour Champion at age 16, scored a marvellous 8 under par score of 50 to take Suffolk Open title at Stonham Barns by one shot from Pele Heydon. Owen was one behind Pele, the pre-tournament favourite, after 9 holes but a birdie on the 10th and a bogey by Pele gave 17-year-old the lead which he never relinquished. Ian Plumb was in 3rd place with a score of 52 with Neil Donohoe and Ben Bedford tied 4th two shots further back. The Under 18 Trophy was won by Tom Scott with a very good score of 61 and the Under 15 Trophy was won by Charlie Tranter a great score of 60. The Ladies title was won by Eve Humphries. Stonham Barns Golf hosts eight tournaments every year. These tournaments are aimed to be fun as well as competitive and are open to anyone no matter what experience they have. There are prizes for men, ladies and juniors but it’s also important to come along and have a game with friends or family in a relaxed environment. Footgolfer Pele Heydon dominated the first footgolf tournament of the year at Stonham Barns Footgolf. With 7 birdies and an eagle of the 2,640 course he achieved a nine under par score of 49. Pele was delighted with his win and said he hopes to play in more of the Stonham Barns tournaments as well as some regional and national events In 2nd place was Daren Wheat with a score of 52 (-6 under par) and one shot further back was Ian Plumb who scored a 53 (-5 under par). The junior prize was won by 13 year old Bailey Rosier who scored an impressive 58 (level par) with Charlie Tranter in second with a score of 61 (+3 over par). The Suffolk footgolf course at Stonham Barns was one of the first to open in 2013 and they have been amazed by the popularity of the sport and last year had over 5,000 people playing footgolf around the course including a number of past Ipswich Town stars, John Wark, Russell Osman and Kieron Dyer who all really enjoyed their games. About FootGolf FootGolf is a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf. The game is played with a regulation #5 football at a golf course facility on shortened holes with 21-inch diameter cups. The rules largely correspond to the rules of golf. FootGolf as a game is played throughout the world in many different forms, but as a sport it is regulated by the Federation for International FootGolf (FIFG) and by UK Footgolf (UKFG) in the UK. David Harper from Essex claimed the 2016 Stonham FootGolf Players Championship in style with a 51, 7 under par. After 9 holes Pele Hayden was leading by two shots but a 5 under par back nine secured the title for David. There was a tie for 2nd place between Darren Wheat and Pele Hayden with scores of 53 (5 under par). However as Darren has the better back nine, 6 under par 23, he took 2nd place and Pele was 3rd. Lee Broster, playing his first ever game of footgolf and playing barefooted, walked off with the Suffolk Open FootGolf title at Stonham Barns. Lee scored a 7 under par score of 51 to tie first place with last year’s champion Kevin Ward. A play off followed between Broster and Ward for the championship trophy. The first hole was halved in birdie twos. Then at the 105yd second hole Broster fired a killer strike to within 15 ft of the hole and then followed that with a confident putt for another birdie two after Ward had already finished the hole with a par. Lee compiled his score with a two under par front nine and then a 5 under par back nine with 4 birdies in his last 5 holes to match the score of Kevin Ward who also has an excellent 6 under par last nine holes. Their scores of 51 were five ahead of the third place score of Chris Tranter, a regular in the Stonham Barns Footgolf events. Lee was amazed by his own performance and is now considering entering more footgolf tournaments after chatting with runner up Kevin Ward, a regular footgolfer with tournament experience. This was the 2nd playing of the Suffolk Open FootGolf Championship at Stonham Barns. There were over 40 entries and the event was played on Sunday 19th June. A special mention must go to Jordan Catchpole for his tremendous hole in one on the 110 yard 10th hole. The celebrations were heard around the course. The junior category was won by Charlie Tranter with an excellent score of 66 with Barnaby Hunt in 2nd place with a score of 70. Following on from the success of their eight UK Footgolf Ranking Tournaments last year, which included the Suffolk Open FootGolf Championship, they have announced another eight event for this year. Mark, who is the Diss Town Youth FC Secretary, brought down a group of boys from the club and showed them how it was done. There were four players on 54 (4 under par), Chris Tranter, Darren Wheat, Dan Ferretti (UK Footgolf) and Ian Heydon. Darren and Ian are ranked in the UK’s top 50 players. The junior event was dominated by the Diss Town Youth FC boys who took eight out of the top ten places. Well done to Daniel Whyman who scored a 65 and won on count back from Jamie Channell who also scored a 65. It was great to see so many juniors playing in this event (15 played) and well done to the youngsters from Ipswich Exiles who were all under 13. We had two holes in one on the day. Both were on the 10th hole with one from Craig Bolger and the other from junior, Chris Disney. Footgolf has really taken off at Stonham Barns and the course is now open every day. This year over 5,000 players have played this new exiting sport at Stonham Barns and they are now taking bookings for individuals, groups and even Christmas parties. With the help of a hole in one on the 105 yard 18th hole Kevin achieved his best score , a 9 under par 49. His three wins at Stonham Barns included the Suffolk Footgolf Open which he won in June and the July FootGolf Event. Regulars at Stonham, Chris Tranter and Darren Wheat, finished 2nd and 3rd with excellent scores of 54 and 55 respectively.
