Footgolf is the latest sports craze that is taking the UK by storm. Everyone wants to try footgolf which is a combination of the popular sports of golf and football. Stonham Barns Golf have announced their Footgolf Tournament schedule for 2016. Following on from the success of their eight UK Footgolf Ranking Tournaments last year, which included the Suffolk Open FootGolf Championship, they have announced another eight event for this year. The first event of the year will be held on Sunday 20th March. Play will be over 18 holes and everyone is welcome to come along and play, mens, ladies, families and juniors. Entry for all events will be £10. In addition these footgolf competitions will form part of the Stonham Suffolk Ranking Table and all scores from players will be listed through the year. At the end of the season the leaders from each category will receive prizes and a trophy. The first Suffolk Open FootGolf Championship Stonham Barns was won by Kevin Ward with a great score of 53 (-5 under par). In a round that included seven twos he achieved his best ever score around the Stonham Course. Kevin from Colchester is a regular at Stonham Barns having played in most of the UK Ranking events. In second place was Dan McLaughlin who also scored 53 and just lost out on count back. There were 4 players on 54, Darren Wheat, Chris Tranter, Liam Osborne and Ben Garnham. There were three holes in hole on the day. Amazingly Lewis Warnes achieved the first ever two holes in one in a round. He holed in one on the 2nd and the 16th holes. The third hole in one was achieved by Matt Prescott on the 7th hole. Over 60 footgolfers competed in The Suffolk Open FootGolf Championship which was played over 18 holes medal play around the scenic Stonham Barns FootGolf Course with the winner receiving the Scarlett Brown Trophy. Footgolf has really taken off now in the UK and now there are over 120 footgolf courses (100 new courses over the last year) with many more opening soon. Ian Haydon won the Stonham UK FootGolf Open with a score of 56 (2 under par). This was Ian’s third event at Stonham Barns and having finished 3rd and 2nd on his previous visits he has now has achieved his first win. In addition he was really pleased to have triumphed over his son Pele who has won three of the UK FootGolf events at Stonham Barn this year Ian won on count back and with birdies on his last three holes achieved an amazing six shot comeback on Darren Wheat who was five under with three to play and when he bogeyed the last three holes he finished on 56 as well. In third place was Ian’s son Pele who scored a 57 (1 under par). There were 11 juniors playing and the junior prize was won by 9 yr old Tyler Weaver with a score of 68. This was one of his first games of FootGolf and he managed to beat his 12 yr old brother, Max Weaver. Both Tyler and Max are keen golfers and currently in the Suffolk County under 12 squad and under 14 squad respectively. This Stonham Footgolf event attracted over 50 footgolf players from around the region. This was one of six UK FootGolf ranking events that are being held on the scenic Stonham Barns golf course this year. Rob Gillan won the July FootGolf UK Ranking Tournament at Stonham Barns on Sunday 20th July with an excellent score of 56. Rob won on count back as Alex Sutton also scored a 56 and the title had to be decided on the last 9 hole score and Rob scored 27 to Alex’s 28. This was Rob Gillan’s first win at Stonham Barns and his score of 2 under par included 6 two’s.
Rob was delighted to be presented the 1st Prize trophy by ex England and Ipswich football player Russell Osman. Russell, playing his first ever round of footgolf, also played in the event and said he really enjoyed playing and could see why this new sport has become so popular. He said he certainly will be playing more footgolf in the future. Pele Haydon won has won the last three UK Ranking events at Stonham finished 4th with a score of 57 and now moves up to second in the UK National Ranking Table. The ladies prize was won by Faye Trigg from Millers Barn who are just building their own FootGolf Course and the junior prize was won by Joe Sims. On a day when it looked like thunder and lightning may halt play over 50 footgolf players from around the region played 18 holes in pursuit of some ranking points. This was one of six UK FootGolf ranking events that are being held on the scenic Stonham Barns 9 hole course this year. Amazingly a footgolfer named Pele (Pele Haydon) won the first ever UK Ranking FootGolf Tournament at Stonham Barns Golf Centre on Sunday 13th April. The event attracted over 30 footgolf players from around the region and is the first of a number of ranking events run by the UK FootGolf Association all over the UK. Pele Haydon won the tournament by 3 shots after scoring a great score of 58 for the 18 hole event. In 2nd place was Oliver Riches who scored a 61 and in 3rd place (on countback) was Ian Haydon (father of Pele) who also scored a 61. The junior winner was Josh Driver who scored a 69 and the ladies winner was Emily Donnachie. We should mention the incredible hole in one achieved by Paul Dobson on the 7th hole which lifted him into the top twenty and gaining valuable ranking points. It’s the first hole in one at FootGolf achieved on the Stonham Barns FootGolf course since it opened last August. Pele and many of the players are aiming to play in as many of the ranking tournaments as possible in a bid to top the National Rankings at the beginning of September. The leader will get an all expenses paid trip to New York to represent the UK and compete in the US FootGolf Open later that month.
