The aim of the junior events at Stonham Barns in Suffolk is to give the youngsters a chance to compete in friendly junior golf tournaments and to experience how to score, play and manage their game around the course. Many of the juniors have not played in any kind of competition and we aim to give as many prizes as we can to reward them for their play. Stonham Barns Golf Centre has been running eight junior events every year since 2001 and over the years there have been thousands of young golfers who have competed in a Stonham Barns Junior event and we would like to think we have helped and encouraged them to carry on playing this great game. Alexandra, who plays her golf in Prague and has an 18 handicap, travelled with her parents yesterday and now plans to stay in England for a weeks holiday. She won the Under 12 Age category with a very good score of 36 in her first round at the 9 hole course at Stonham Barns with a round that included three pars and a birdie on the 4th hole. In 2nd place was 11 year old Rio Everitt from Stowmarket Golf Club with a score of 38. The Under 10 Age category was won by Sawyer Osbourn, a 10 year old from Lakenheath Golf Club with the best score of the day, a 33 (4 over par). The Under 8 Age category was won by 6 year old Finlay Brock with an excellent score of 41. It was great to see the girls dominate the Under 12 Age group taking the top four places and well done to all of them. Its getting very exciting with two days to go and now with a Monday finish for the second time in the tournaments history. I have been working this week on the Golfzon Stand at the HSBC Golfzone. This is one of the busiest stands in the tented village at the Open with over 50,000 visitors in the week. On the Golfzon stand there were two challenges, Longest Drive up the 18th hole and a nearest the pin short game. There are three Golfzon golf simulators presented at the Doosan stand and in the HSBC Golf Zone, who are official patrons of the 144th Open. See more pictures below from the Golfzon stand. Golfzon are featuring various programs for GDR users including Chip Shot Challenge and Longest Drive. In addition, it has installed another system in at the Rule, a opub in St Andrews which will be promoted and operated by GolfPunk Magazine, in an attempt to increase spectators participation. Images from the Golfzon Stand at the OpenHenry Meadows, a nine year old member of Fynn Valley Golf Club has won the 15th East Anglian Under 12 Junior Golf Championship with an 18 hole score of 73. Henry has been a consistent winner on the Stonham Barns 9 hole golf course over the last year with a fantastic nine wins in ten starts. He has three more years to play in this event and has the chance equal the three wins by Lee Spurling, the 2006, 2007 and 2008 winner. In second place was 11 year old George Whitehall from Ely Golf Club with a score of 74 and in third place were 8 year old Charlie Goodridge from Bury Golf Club and 12 year old Alfie Guy-Pinkney from Ely Golf Club with scores of 75. The age categories were won by George Whitehall for the Under 12’s, Henry Meadows for the Under 10’s and 6 year old Finlay Brock won the Under 8 age category with a great score of 82 helped by a birdie at the third hole. In a round that included seven twos he achieved his best ever score around the Stonham Course. Kevin from Colchester is a regular at Stonham Barns having played in most of the UK Ranking events. In second place was Dan McLaughlin who also scored 53 and just lost out on count back. There were 4 players on 54, Darren Wheat, Chris Tranter, Liam Osborne and Ben Garnham. There were three holes in hole on the day. Amazingly Lewis Warnes achieved the first ever two holes in one in a round. He holed in one on the 2nd and the 16th holes. The third hole in one was achieved by Matt Prescott on the 7th hole. Over 60 footgolfers competed in The Suffolk Open FootGolf Championship which was played over 18 holes medal play around the scenic Stonham Barns FootGolf Course with the winner receiving the Scarlett Brown Trophy. Footgolf has really taken off now in the UK and now there are over 120 footgolf courses (100 new courses over the last year) with many more opening soon. Footgolfer Pele Heydon achieved probably one of the best rounds ever played at footgolf. His round of 46 was 12 under par and smashed his previous record of 52 around the Stonham Barns FootGolf Course. His amazing round consisted of 12 birdies and 6 pars with matching front and back nine scores of 23. This gave him his second win this year at Stonham Barns UK Ranking Footgolf Tournament. In 2nd place was his father Ian Heydon who also achieved his best round ever, a 10 under par, 48. Amazing scoring! This popular event attracted over 60 players from all over the region which included 52 men, 2 ladies and 8 juniors. FootGolf is really taking off as a sport and there are now over 120 footgolf courses in the UK. The next UK FootGolf tournament at Stonham Barns is the first playing of the Suffolk FootGolf Open. This event is open to everyone and the winner will receive the Scarlett Brown Trophy and become the Suffolk FootGolf Champion. This will be held on Saturday 20th June with tee times starting at 2.00pm. The Stonham Junior Flag Tournament proves a great success with the juniors. The event now in its 15th year attracted juniors from 5 to 14 yrs of age. This fun event gives each junior 36 shots to see how far around the course they can get and then they put a flag in the ground where their 36th shot finishes. The Under 8 category was won by 5yr old Imogen Potter who reached the 6th Green. Imogen, who is part of the Stonham Junior Academy, amazingly achieved a par 3 on her first hole. Pretty good for a 5 yr old. The Under 10 category was won by 10 yr old Sawyer Osbourn from Lakenheath who managed to get the further round the course than any other player, with his 36th shot finishing on the 9th fairway. The Under 12 category was won by Soloman Westmancott, a 12 year old Stonham Barns player by reaching the 8th fairway and the Under 15 category was won by 13 yr old Layla Farthing from Fynn Valley who reached the 7th fairway. Stonham Barns have been running Junior Tournaments for over 16 years and currently run 8 events through the year for youngsters from 4-15yrs to experience playing in junior golf tournaments in a friendly relaxed environment.
