12 year old Jasmine Points from Bury St Edmunds Golf Club won the 19th Stonham Junior Players Championship, which was played on Saturday 23rd November, with a very good score of 37. She won by one shot over her 10 year old brother Johnathan Points with Imogen Potter from Diss Golf Club in 3rd place. In the age categories Tobias Maynard won the Under 8 prize, Johnathan Points won the Under 10''s and Hayden Beckett won the Under 15's This event is always the last event of the season at Stonham Barns Golf Park and even though some of the past winners have gone on to become England Internationals and Professional Tour players, the aim of this event and other events here at Stonham is just to make golf enjoyable and rewarding for the young golfers whatever level they achieve. See Full Report & Scores 12 year old golfer, Charlie Goodridge, won the East Anglian Under 12 Junior Golf Championship for the third time in four years. Charlie from Bury St Edmunds Golf Club scored an excellent 66 which included a black nine of 31. He has been regular supporter of the junior tournaments at Stonham Barns and it was fitting he won this event as it was the last time he was eligible to play. In the age categories Tobias Maynard from Southwold Golf Club won the Under 8’s with Will Holmwood in 2nd place. Imogen Potter from Diss Golf Club won the Under 10’s with Michael Kirk in 2nd place and Ben Green from Stonham Barns won the Under 15 Trophy with Joshua Newman in 2nd. This was the 19th playing of this event which was established in 2001 by Tony Dobson, the PGA Professional at Stonham Barns. The event, which was featured on a Channel 4 documentary in 2008, has produced some great champions and given many others the chance to enjoy playing some competitive golf at a young age in a relaxed, friendly environment. View Full Results Alexandra Rock, a 13-year-old who travelled from Prague to compete, chipped and putted the final green to win the 2017 Stonham Junior Players Championship title by 3 shots and retain the title she won in 2016. Her score of even par 29 was the best score in recent years and only bettered by Alastair Hall’s score of 27 in 2003. Alex who lives in Prague, is a member of Podebrady Golf Club and amazingly now has a handicap of five. In second place was the 2015 winner, 11-year-old Charlie Goodridge from Bury St Edmunds who scored a 32 (3 over par). The Stonham Barns Players Championship started at Stonham Barns in 2001 and has been played every year since. Over 500 juniors have played in the event over the years with some previous winners going on to become county players and even England internationals. In addition to rewarding the winners one of the main aims of these events is to encourage players of all standards to come along, have fun and enjoy playing some competitive golf. Although this event was played on a bright sunny day the winds were bitingly cold and well done to all the players for completing the 9 holes. There were four age categories and the winner of the Under 8 was Beatrice Meadows who scored a 45. The Under 10’s was won by Kieran Lewin with a score of 43. The Under 12’s was won by Charlie Goodridge with a score of 32 and the Under 15’s of course won by the overall winner Alexandra Rock. This event was played using Big HOLE Golf which uses larger 8’ golf holes. Big HOLE Golf which was developed by Murray Blair in Australia. The concept is now becoming popular all over the world as a way of getting increased participation into golf – QUICKER ROUNDS – MAKES GOLF FUN – HAVE LESS PUTTS. The Stonham Junior Flag Golf Tournament, now in its 15th year proved a great success. This year the event was played using the Big HOLE Golf concept where the hole is 8” in size, almost twice the size of a regular hole. The aim is to make golf fun, speed up play and make putting easier. The juniors loved it and we had plenty of chip ins and hole outs. In total 18 juniors played from all over the Suffolk and they were blessed with a lovely sunny morning. The Flag Tournament is played over 9 holes and each player has 36 shots to get as far round the course as they can. After playing their 36th shot they put a flag in the ground. This year 9 year old Charlie Goodridge amazed us all by reaching the 12th fairway having played his first nine holes in level par 29. He was a clear winner in the U10 age category. The Under 8’s was won by Ryan Daley, a 7 year old from Stonham Barns who reached the 8th green. The U12’s was won by Sawyer Osbourn, an 11 year old from Lakenheath reaching the 9th green and the U15’s was won by 13 year old Soloman Westmancott from Stonham Barns who also reached the 9th green. See full results at : Stonham Junior Flag Golf Tournament Results Well done to 9 year old Henry Meadows from Fynn Valley Golf Club on winning the Stonham Barns April Junior Tournament with an excellent score of 32 (3 over par). This was the best score of the day and Henry was the winner of the Under 10 Age Category. Henry had a close game with his playing partner, 9 year old Charlie Goodridge, who was only one behind with 3 holes to play but a blistering finish of 2,3,3 (1 under par) by Henry gave him a 4 shot winning margin. The Under 12 Age Category was won by Sawyer Osborne, an 11 year old from Lakenheath Golf Club, with the second best score of the day, 32 (4 over par). The Under 8 Age Category was won by Ryan Daley, a 7 yr old player from Stonham Barns, with a score of 52. The aim of the junior events at Stonham Barns in Suffolk is to give the youngsters a chance to experience competing in friendly junior golf tournaments. Stonham Barns has been running eight junior events every year for the last 15 years and have given thousands of young golfers the chance to develop their golf game. The October event was won by a regular winner at Stonham, Ryan Turnbull, a 13 yr old member of Cretingham Golf Club, with a very good score of 31 (2 over par). Ryan has won many junior events here and will be defending his Stonham Players Championship title next month. In second place was Adam Scott, a 14 year member of the Stonham Junior Academy, who only started playing golf this year. Adam scored a 38, his best score to date which included his first ever birdie on the 8th hole. The Under 10 Age Category was won by 9 year old Charlie Goodridge from Bury St Edmunds Golf Club. Left hander Charlie is an excellent player and he stayed calm after a poor start to score a 39. The Under 8 Age Category was won by 6 year old Imogen Potter with a score of 66. Imogen is a member of the Stonham Barns Junior Academy really loves her golf and has a great attitude. The Stonham Junior events are open to any juniors from ages 4-15. The last event of the year will be the Stonham Junior Players Championship on Sunday 29th November.
